What is a BUCKAROO? Well, it is the belief of the Perry County Regulators that our youth should be taught the proper and safe ways to handle firearms. They need to learn to respect them and use them properly. We also know, as many of you do, that our youth are the future of our sport. We are proud that we now have the BUCKAROO class on Regulator ridge. This class is for youngsters age 10 to 12. They shoot in a regular posse. They are accompanied to the line by their parent. The parent is responsible to help the posse leader control the safety of the shooter. The major emphasis is on safety. Secondary will be learning the Cowboy Spirit and accuracy. Time will be kept; however, they will not be scored with the rest of the shooters. Also, scoring of knockdown target will be relaxed. A hit will count. Now, to us old timers, a .38, .44 or .45 or a 12 gauge may seem like nothing, but, to these young shooters, they can be scary and intimidating. So, these shooters may shoot .22 revolvers and rifles and .410 shotguns. The last thing we want to do is turn them off to the sport because of too much gun. We all know how expensive firearms are, so we decided to give these shooters a break. They will only need one single action revolver, a lever or pump rifle, and, optional, a single barrel, double barrel, or pump shotgun. The shotgun may have ejectors. We know this is not "Cowboy", but we feel that this will reduce cost and give more young shooters the opportunity to learn to handle firearms safely. Ammo will be standard velocity, all lead ball .22 and lead shot .410. Shotshells may be 2 ½ inch or 3 inch. Leather will be optional. If the young shooter does not feel confident drawing their firearm, the parent may hand the revolver to the shooter when that time arrives. They will still need the cowboy hat and long sleeve shirts. The Buckaroo will follow the same safety rules as all shooters. They will load and unload at the same tables as all shooters. Their firearms will be checked the same as all shooters. Also, before their first shoot, the Buckaroo will be asked to demonstrate their ability to safely handle their firearms to the range safety officer. This can be done the day of the shoot before the regular shoot starts. We hope that this class will prepare the young shooter to step into the Junior class when they reach 12 years of age. We want it to be as positive of an experience as possible. For more information, contact Dutch P. Coaltrain, (717)789-3893 or Letort Lawman, We hope you will encourage your youngsters to become involved in our sport. ![]() Web design by Sam Gray |
